Lloyd is an energetic six year old, in kindergarten at Riverside Academy. Lloyd is an exceptionally bright child. However, he was having problems with some math concepts being introduced in his kindergarten curriculum. Not only were the students working on addition and subtraction, but they also had to work on basic graphing and “money problems”, and that was hard for Lloyd. De De, Lloyd’s mother, signed him up for Santa Maria’s After School Activities program, two afternoons each week at the Santa Maria Center in Sedamsville. Through this program students not only get assistance with homework, but get a healthy snack and lots of attention from the staff and volunteers. Lloyd’s mother says the program was a big reason Lloyd’s math skills improved at Riverside Academy.

H. Dater Foundation
One of the largest supporters of Santa Maria Community Services' youth programs is the Charles H. Dater Foundation. With funding from this foundation, area children can attend summer camps, various outings including Reds games, Kings Island, fishing, trips to area parks, skating and bowling, and take woodworking and pottery classes or participate in sports including Tae Kwon Do, baseball and volleyball. By getting involved in a variety of activities, the children are exposed to many opportunities, which help develop their sense of self and leadership skills. To learn more about Charles H.
