Youth
Development
Youth development programs focus on helping youth acquire skills
necessary to lead successful lives, increase young people's responsibility
for the community, enhance their tolerance and increase children's
success at school. The activities include leadership development
groups, educational field trips, sports teams, summer camps, parental
involvement and mentoring, community volunteer activities, tutoring
and socialization opportunities. Tutoring/homework help is also
available to foster academic achievement and improvement.
One of the largest supporters of Santa Maria Community Services'
youth programs is the Charles H. Dater Foundation. With funding
from this foundation, area children can attend summer camps, various
outings including Reds games, Kings Island, fishing, trips to
area parks, skating and bowling, and take woodworking and pottery
classes or participate in sports including Tae Kwon Do, baseball
and volleyball. By getting involved in a variety of activities,
the children are exposed to many opportunities, which help develop
their sense of self and leadership skills.
