Promotoras
What is Promotoras?
Promotoras is a grass roots program that got its
start in Central Ameica in the 1960s. It is a peer health-educator
program that is designed to train Hispanic/Latina women about
various health topics.
Hispanic/Latina women who are recognized as leaders
within their community are recruited to participate in the program.
They are then trained on particular areas of health. In the case
of the Promotoras program being implemented by the Bienestar program
of Santa Maria Community Services, the training will focus on
two areas of concern within the Hispanic/Latino community; Alcoholism
and Domestic Violence.
The goal is for the Promotoras to them take this
knowledge and become sources of information and referral for others
in their community.
