Place Matters

PLACE MATTERS is an initiative of United Way and other major area social investors aimed at comprehensive investments in three neighborhoods of Greater Cincinnati area. The initiative is based on the recognition that social problems are not evenly distributed throughout our region but, instead, concentrate in a limited number of geographic places, and that social problems are tightly interconnected. Based on these recognitions, the funding collaborative is making concentrated investments in three neighborhoods of our region with high levels of poverty and social disorder – but also with strong local leadership and a commitment to change.  Price Hill is one of three such neighborhoods.  Early Childhood/Youth Development, Housing, and Economic Development are the main areas chosen for investment in Price Hill.

The decision to choose Santa Maria Community Services as a PLACE MATTERS lead agency in Early Childhood/Youth Development area evolved gradually as a result of a consensus among neighborhood leaders, funders, and Community Building Institute which oversaw the initiative development.  Santa Maria possesses years of expertise in Early Child/Parenting and Youth Development through its well established programs of Every Child Succeeds, Promoting Our Preschoolers, Home Child Care assistance, and Youth Organizing.  The agency was also chosen by Cincy Afterschool Program (through YMCA) to run afterschool program at Carson Elementary School.
