Health/Wellness

Santa Maria helps building healthy communities where people live healthy lives. Our Health and Wellness Program reaches out to older adults, Appalachians, African Americans and Latino immigrants who do not receive regular health care. Volunteers and staff act as health navigators helping individuals in their homes, churches, community centers and in health fairs.

Wellness program
Offers health education and resources
for underinsured or uninsured
individuals through home visits,
public health fairs and events, and
at various health sites. Program helps with prescription access, medications,
medical supplies,eyeglasses, hearing
aids, health promotion support, and educational activities.

Meals-on-Wheels program
Provides home-bound, older adults with a nutritious meal five days a week and a frozen meal for the weekend. Our elderly clients also have the added assurance of knowing that someone will regularly check on our clients’ well being, and help out with other tasks or supplies if necessary.  In 2007 188 volunteers provided 11,797 hours to the Meals-on-Wheels program.

Read Mr. Smith's Story

Mrs. Smith had many problems to deal with, both physical and related to her life and family situation.  In addition to having hearing problems this small, quiet woman, is legally blind and the only caregiver for her seriously disabled husband. She was truly overwhelmed that someone cared enough about her to take her for a hearing test, follow-up and fit her with a new hearing aid! To be cared for was a new experience for her, though she has been on the earth nearly 65 years.
